Photogroupie: Interview with Marco Brantner from Non Talkers

Hi, my name is Marco Brantner and I’m part of the Non Talkers, a Pop-Folk duo from Portugal, blending diverse influences into our unique sound. Our music explores personal experiences and emotions, aiming to connect deeply with listeners. Alongside my partner, we strive to create songs that resonate on a personal and universal level, hoping to share stories and moments that are both intimate and relatable. Our journey in music is a continuous exploration of sound, emotion, and connection

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST ALBUM OR SINGLE

Our latest project is the album “Roots,” a deeply personal work that reflects our journey, challenges, and growth. It’s a collection of songs that embody our experiences and emotions, crafted with the intent to resonate with listeners on a profound level. “Roots” represents our essence, combining heartfelt lyrics with our signature Pop-Folk sound. This album is a milestone for us, showcasing our evolution as artists and individuals.

WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?

The song “You Don’t Remember Anymore” from our album “Roots” is a poignant representation of our sound. This track delves into the theme of memory and loss, blending our folk influences with deeply personal storytelling. Its emotional depth and the harmonious blend of vocals and instruments exemplify the essence of what we strive to convey through our music, making it a defining piece of our repertoire.

DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC IN A FEW WORDS.

Emotive, authentic Pop-Folk with a touch of indie, blending heartfelt storytelling and melodic harmonies to connect deeply with listeners.

WHO HAVE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES BEEN?

Our musical landscape is deeply influenced by a blend of classic and contemporary artists. While modern bands like The Lumineers and Kodaline inspire us with their storytelling and emotion, our roots trace back to the iconic sounds of U2, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and Bob Dylan. These legends have shaped our approach to music, blending timeless melodies with profound lyrics, guiding us to create songs that aim to resonate on a personal and universal level.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

My journey into music was sparked by an encounter with a busking musician in Barcelona, which deeply inspired me. This experience, combined with a passion for expressing emotions and stories through music, led me to pursue a musical career. Alongside Evita, we’ve explored various musical paths, finding our unique voice as the Non Talkers, and continuously drawing inspiration from our travels, experiences, and the rich tapestry of life.

WHAT IS THE CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU WHEN MAKING MUSIC?

Our creative process involves a blend of inspiration and collaboration. It often starts with a melody or a concept that captures our emotions. From there, we build on it with lyrics that tell a story or convey a feeling, making sure every element feels authentic and true to our experiences. We enjoy experimenting with different sounds and instruments to find the right atmosphere for each song. This process is deeply personal, yet we strive to create music that connects universally with our listeners.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE THE COOLEST COLLABORATION PROJECT BETWEEN YOU AND ANOTHER ARTIST?

A collaboration project between us and Kodaline would be incredibly cool. Their emotive approach to songwriting and storytelling aligns closely with our own, and blending our sounds could create something deeply moving and unique. The combination of our folk-pop style with their powerful lyrical narratives could produce music that resonates on a profound level, offering fans of both bands a truly special musical experience.

PLEASE TELL US A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF.

A random fact about myself is that I am quite a polyglot, speaking Portuguese, Spanish, and German, while Evita speaks Dutch and Portuguese. Our love for languages extends beyond music, influencing our approach to songwriting and allowing us to connect with a diverse audience.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

The best advice we’ve been given is to stay true to ourselves and our music. In an industry that’s constantly evolving and where trends come and go, maintaining our authenticity has been crucial. This advice has guided us through our journey, reminding us that genuine connection with our audience comes from honest and heartfelt music. It’s shaped our approach to songwriting, production, and performance, ensuring that we remain authentic in our artistic expression.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

If we could change anything about the industry, it would be to create more opportunities for genuine talent to shine through, regardless of marketing budgets or social media presence. We believe in a music industry where the focus is more on artistry and less on commercial viability, allowing diverse voices and sounds to reach audiences worldwide without being overshadowed by mainstream trends.

WHAT’S NEXT?

What’s next for us is a continuation of our musical journey with a focus on creating new material that deepens our exploration of emotive storytelling. We’re also planning more live performances to connect with our audience in different regions. Additionally, we’re looking into collaborations that can bring new dimensions to our sound. Stay tuned for exciting developments and projects that we can’t wait to share with our fans.
