What are the origins of the band, how long have you been playing
together?

Our journey as the Non Talkers officially began in 2019, although we, Marco and Evita Brantner, had been making music together since meeting in Greece in 2011. The transition to forming the Non Talkers was a pivotal moment that came about after meeting producer and drummer Hugo Danin. It was Hugo who helped us refine and define our musical identity, shaping the unique sound that characterizes our band today. This collaboration marked a significant turning point, solidifying our path as the Non Talkers and setting the foundation for our musical journey.


What should people expect when they check the band out? How would you
describe yourself?

When you check out the Non Talkers, expect a blend of heartfelt pop-folk music with a touch of indie charm. Our songs are deeply personal, reflecting our experiences and emotions, and are characterized by a mix of acoustic and electronic elements. We aim to create an intimate atmosphere in our music, inviting listeners to connect with our stories and emotions. Our sound is authentic and expressive, a true representation of our journey as artists and individuals.


How did you feel performing your first gig as a band, and how was it?!

Performing our first gig as the Non Talkers was an exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience. There was a mix of excitement and anxiety, as it was the first time we were presenting our collective musical vision to an audience. The energy of performing live, feeling the immediate response of the crowd, and sharing our music in such a direct way was incredibly fulfilling. It was a defining moment that solidified our passion and commitment to this journey as a band, and it’s a memory we cherish deeply.

The new music scene is bursting at the seams at the minute with fresh
talent, in what ways do you feel that a band has to stand out to build a
name for themselves?

In today’s bustling music scene, standing out as a band requires a unique blend of authenticity, creativity, and engagement with your audience. Developing a distinct sound and style is crucial, as it helps to set you apart in a sea of talented artists. Equally important is the ability to connect with listeners on a personal level, whether through your lyrics, performances, or online presence. Consistently delivering high-quality music and a strong, relatable brand narrative can also help in building a loyal fan base and a recognized name in the industry.


What are you working on at the minute that people can check out?

At the moment, we’re excited about our latest album, “Roots,” and we’re also focusing on live performances. Additionally, we’re continuing with live streaming, which is a format we really enjoy. It offers a more intimate experience to our viewers, almost like they’re watching us rehearse in our own space. It’s a great way to connect with our audience in a unique and personal manner. In terms of a similar audience, which band out there at the minute do
you feel you would be best suited to open for?


Considering our musical style and audience, we feel we would be best suited to open for a band like The Lumineers. Their blend of folk-rock and indie-pop aligns closely with our sound and approach to music. We share a similar ethos in terms of authentic storytelling and creating an intimate connection with the audience, which would make for a harmonious and complementary pairing for live performances. Opening for them would be an incredible opportunity to reach listeners who appreciate heartfelt, narrative-driven music.


Excluding yourself, which new band would you like to see break out and
become a success?


We’d really like to see Banners gain even more success. Although they’re already on the rise, we feel that bands with their kind of sound and artistic integrity deserve a larger spotlight. Their approach to music, blending heartfelt lyrics with captivating melodies, resonates with us, and we believe they have the potential to make a significant impact on the music scene. It’s always exciting to see bands like Banners, who prioritize authentic musical expression, break through and achieve widespread recognition.

What are your own first musical memories? And what was the lightbulb
moment that made you go “I want to do that”?

Marco: My musical journey began more as a gradual realization than a sudden revelation. It wasn’t until witnessing a talented busker in Barcelona that I understood the power of connecting with people through music in the simplest settings. This inspired me to start expressing myself through music in my mid-twenties, leading to forming my first band. It was a process of discovering how music could be a medium for personal expression.

Evita: For me, singing was always a personal passion, something I did for myself. It wasn’t until meeting Marco at 27 that I considered singing professionally. His musical path influenced me greatly, guiding me into a professional singing career and showing me the joys of sharing music with others.


What was the last gig that you attended as a fan?

The last gig we attended as fans was a concert by Bonnie Tyler. It was an amazing experience to be in the audience, enjoying the music from the perspective of a fan. Bonnie Tyler’s powerful voice and stage presence were truly inspiring, reminding us of the magic that live performances hold.


What current social issue are you particularly passionate about?
One social issue we are particularly passionate about is mental health awareness. The stigma surrounding mental health often prevents people from seeking the help they need. Through our music and platform, we aim to contribute to the conversation, encouraging understanding, acceptance, and support for those struggling with mental health issues.

There were some amazing new albums released this year, what would be your album of the year? And, what other new music have you been enjoying so far this year?
As artists, we’re always exploring new music, and this year has been no exception. While we can’t pinpoint a single album as the ‘album of the year’ just yet, we’ve been enjoying a diverse range of new releases. Our tastes are eclectic, so we’ve been delving into various genres, finding inspiration and enjoyment in the wide array of creative work being released. It’s exciting to see the musical landscape continuously evolve, and we’re always on the lookout for fresh sounds and innovative ideas.


What does 2024 hold for you?
For us, 2024 is all about continuing our musical journey and exploring new creative horizons. We plan to work on new material, possibly experimenting with different sounds and themes. We’re also looking forward to connecting with our audience through more live performances and potentially expanding our tour to reach new places. Additionally, we’re keen on harnessing digital platforms to engage with our fans in innovative ways. Overall, 2024 is set to be a year of growth, creativity, and deeper connections with our listeners.
